True Star is Looking for a Journalism Instructor

True Star Foundation is a non profit media company run by youth.  True Star’s purpose is to inspire dreams so that young people can find their voice, choose their path, and prepare for life.  True Star youth create digital news and entertainment content for a youth audience.  True Star youth are reporters, writers, producers, creatives, and brand strategist.

True Star Foundation is seeking a journalism instructor to teach an after school program for high school grade youth.  This program will teach and guide students in the creation of content for True Star’s digital platform

The candidate for this position will need to relate, connect, and enjoy working with young people as well as help them find their unique voice. We prefer a candidate who has a professional background in journalism. College Degree is preferred. This program will take place for 10 weeks Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 3:30p -6:30p at Gwendolyn Brooks High School 250 East 111th Street.

Salary ranges from $18 – $28 an hour depending on education and work experience.

The Instructor will be responsible for:

-Assisting students with finding their voice.

-Teaching students Journalism 101, including: news and feature writing, reporting, interviewing, proofreading, editing, researching and fact-checking.

-Work with True Star senior editorial staff to achieve the goal of creating a content that relates and engages the True Star audience, i.e. news stories, investigations, lists, quizzes, and experiences about youth life and identity

-Assisting with improving student participants grammar, along with written and oral communication skills

-Edit student story submissions

-Attend editorial meetings

-Provide available resources to youth participants

-Administering program surveys

-Maintain accurate program attendance records
